To answer the question as to whether or not we can end poverty, we would have to define all the terms in the question. First of all, "We," I would define the "we" in this question as anybody reading this post and certainly anybody finding themselves in the position to want to battle or take a stance on ridding poverty from the world. Next we would need to define "end." In general this would mean be rid of or terminate the existence of something. Finally, we need to define the word "poverty." Wikipedia defines poverty as the condition of not having the means to afford basic human needs such as clean water, nutrition, health care, education, clothing and shelter. A better definition, however; is offered by Wes Stafford of Compassion International and states that poverty is simply "the lack of enough."
So to redefine the question:
Can those of us that would take opposition to the life condition of poverty ever terminate it forever by providing enough resources to those who live in this condition?
I would be curious to hear your answers to this question. Please leave your thoughts below in the comment area. What do you think!?
I don't think so, but the difference we can make is worth the fight.
ReplyDeleteDon't get me started, Mr. Wilson. You get me thinking about these things at midnight and then go to sleep!
ReplyDeleteBut my answer is that everyone in all the world would have to choose to do what is better for their fellow man than what benefits or gratifies themselves. So, since that will not happen, poverty will not be obliterated, but that doesn't mean that it can not. All we can do is obey God in our own actions and watch it ripple out.
